Speed of an Automobile (study)

A car hurtles forward in streaks. Speed of an Automobile (study) by Giacomo Balla breaks the machine into overlapping arcs of motion, wheels dissolving into a fan of repeated silhouettes. Look closely and the surface hums: violet and blue strokes chase one another across the ground, spokes multiplied like a flicker book run at full tilt, the chassis smeared into a blur of ochre and slate. Nothing rests. Even the shadows trail, doubling and tripling behind the hurtling mass until the whole sheet reads as velocity itself rather than the vehicle causing it. Balla understood that speed is felt before it is seen. Hang this in a hallway or stairwell, where movement through the room answers the movement in the image.
