Sparks (II)

Points of light scatter across a darkened sky in Sparks (II), a work by Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis. The title names its subject plainly: sparks, caught mid-flight. Look closely and the light is not uniform. Some sparks burn amber, others cool toward blue, each one a small burst against deep indigo. The dark ground swallows the edges of the faintest, so the eye reads rhythm in where they fall. Ciurlionis arranges them like notation, a scattered score of brief fires.
