Southern Seascape

A fishing boat rides water the color of hammered pewter, its hull tipped toward a coast that glows faintly olive on the horizon. Southern Seascape turns the open sea into something quiet and lived in. Sunlight breaks through a low ceiling of cloud in long, slanting columns, whitening the swell where it lands and leaving the troughs a deep slate blue. Nikolay Bogdanov-Belsky builds the surface from short, loaded brushstrokes, wet against dry, so the foam along the bow reads almost as texture rather than paint. Gulls hold the sky at wide intervals, small dark marks against a milkier upper air. Hang it where you want distance: above a writing desk, along a hallway that needs a window, or in a reading nook with a cool lamp.
