Sorrento. Mount Vesuvius. Two Olive Trees

Two gnarled olive trunks brace against the wind on a Sorrento hillside. Their silvered crowns part to frame the blue cone of Mount Vesuvius across the bay. Konchalovsky builds the scene with loaded, sculptural strokes of oil paint, foliage a mix of sage and pewter green over twisted rope-brown trunks. Beyond them the bay lies in flat ultramarine while the volcano rises as a hazy violet mass under a hot white sky. Sunlit and open-air in feeling, it suits a breakfast room, a sunroom, or a study where travel books and maps gather on the shelves.
