Some Waves

Waves break in close ranks across Some Waves, the marine subject Georges Lacombe pressed into curve, foam and flat blue field, every swell outlined like enamel. The tempera surface sits matte and chalky, cobalt deepening into viridian where each crest turns. Foam runs as pale loops, arabesque more than spray, while the horizon rides high and the sky thins to a sliver of oyster grey. A dark contour cages each color in the Nabi manner, flat and deliberate. A stairwell landing, a cool bedroom, a study shelf of shell and stone: anywhere the day gets loud, the sea here keeps its slow, patient order.
