Soldier's Grave

A lone grave marker stands in an open field, the subject John Quincy Adams renders in his quiet American landscape manner. A simple cross, weathered and leaning, anchors the composition. Around it, the ground is worked in muted greens and earthen browns, brushstrokes short and deliberate. Low scrub and scattered stones break the horizontal band of the horizon. The sky carries a grey-tinged light, and thin shadow lines fall across the sod, giving the small marker its weight. Adams built the scene from restrained tonal washes, saving his sharpest touches for the cross itself. It sits well in a study, a hallway, or beside a reading chair where quiet subjects belong.
