Snowballs

White viburnum blossoms crowd the frame, each rounded cluster heaped like fresh snow. Snowballs belongs to the intimate garden world of Pierre Bonnard. Look at the surface: short dabs of oil pigment stack petal against petal, while violet shadow pools beneath the leaves and a strip of lemon yellow table anchors the vase. The brushwork stays loose, almost embroidered, color doing all the drawing. It suits a sunroom or breakfast nook, somewhere morning light can reach, where the pale blooms seem to hold their glow all day.
