Snow in the Morning by Nikolay Bogdanov-Belsky catches that brief hour when cold blue shadow still holds the ground and low sun begins to warm the rooftops. Bogdanov-Belsky paints with the loose, loaded brush of the Russian realist school: thick white impasto ridges where boots have broken the crust, pale violet drifts against fence posts, the dark wool coats of children rendered in a few sure strokes.
