Snow in the Morning

New snow has settled overnight on a Russian village lane, and the first figures of the day are already moving through it. Snow in the Morning by Nikolay Bogdanov-Belsky catches that brief hour when cold blue shadow still holds the ground and low sun begins to warm the rooftops. Bogdanov-Belsky paints with the loose, loaded brush of the Russian realist school: thick white impasto ridges where boots have broken the crust, pale violet drifts against fence posts, the dark wool coats of children rendered in a few sure strokes. Bare birch trunks, chimney smoke, a slanting beam of amber light. A quiet morning scene for a hallway, stairwell landing, or bedside reading corner where winter light feels welcome.
