Snakes Facing (Whisperer a Serpent)

Two serpents rise and face each other, bodies coiled in mirrored symmetry across the picture plane. This is Snakes Facing, known also as Whisperer a Serpent, from Nicholas Roerich. Roerich paints the encounter in deep serpent greens against a dusky ground, the scales suggested through layered tempera-like brushwork rather than fine detail. The twin heads meet at the center like a mirrored emblem, while a shadowy human presence, the whisperer, haunts the background in muted violet and umber. Symbolist in spirit, the composition reads almost as a heraldic device, calm and charged at once. It belongs in a dim study or a quiet hallway, where low light brings out the cool greens and the stillness between the two facing forms.
