Smolensk. The Porch of the Convent

Stone steps lead up to a convent porch in Smolensk, the subject Nicholas Roerich sets before us here. Weathered walls flank a doorway that seems to hold centuries of quiet entry and exit. The masonry reads in cool greys and muted violet, brushed in broad, confident strokes. A small dome and crosses catch pale northern light above the roofline, while the porch itself stays in half shadow. Snow or pale dust gathers along the threshold, and the paint surface carries the dry, matte texture of tempera on board. Suited to a study or a hallway where quiet observation is welcome.
