Smolensk. The Porch of the Convent

Stone steps lead up to a convent porch in Smolensk, the subject Nicholas Roerich sets before us here. Weathered walls flank a doorway that seems to hold centuries of quiet entry and exit. The masonry reads in cool greys and muted violet, brushed in broad, confident strokes. A small dome and crosses catch pale northern light above the roofline, while the porch itself stays in half shadow.
