Smoke of a Ship and Sunset

A grey plume unwinds in a long ribbon across a burning sky, the only trace of a steamer already gone past the horizon. Fujishima Takeji called the scene Smoke of a Ship and Sunset. Vermilion and apricot wash the upper air while the sea holds a band of slate and violet beneath. The trail is the quietest passage, pale ridges brushed wet into wet, every edge picking up rose light from the sun slung low behind cloud. Give it a corner of a study or a reading nook, somewhere the last daylight lands, where that thin drifting line rewards a second, longer look.
