Small Dunes

Low ridges of sand rise and fall across the picture in Small Dunes, a coastal study by Algernon Talmage. The subject is the land itself, nothing else. Talmage builds the slopes from short, loaded brushstrokes of ochre, raw umber and pale buff, each stroke following the curve of the wind-shaped marram grass. The sky above stays thin and grey, so all the weight sits in the sand, where cool blue shadows pool in the hollows between crests. Light rakes across the ridge line from a low sun. Quiet enough for a hallway, and grounded enough for a study, this seascape suits rooms that favor muted earth palettes and a calm horizon.
