Sleeping Muse II

Sleep has smoothed every line from this face. Constantin Brâncuși reduced the human head to a single smooth oval, and Sleeping Muse II keeps only what rest requires: sealed lids, a quiet mouth. Burnished bronze gives the whole form a mirror sheen; light slides across it like water over stone. One cheek carries the weight. Fine incised lines trace the closed eyes, and the scalp curves away featureless, catching a long pale reflection. Set it in a study alcove or beside a bed, low where evening lamplight falls; few modernist works sit this still, and a room tends to slow around one.
