Škofja Loka in the Snow

Snow settles over the red rooftops of Škofja Loka in this Slovenian landscape by Ivan Grohar. The old town huddles beneath its castle hill as winter closes in. Grohar paints the scene in muted greys, soft whites and the faded ochre of plaster walls, using loose impressionist brushwork that lets snow blur rooflines and lanes. Thin light presses down from a heavy sky, while dark trees and chimneys anchor the composition.
