Sketches of Costumes for Tale of Tsar Saltan

Costumed figures stride across the sheet, drawn for a staging of Tale of Tsar Saltan. Nicholas Roerich sketches boyars, merchants and palace guards in quick, certain contour lines. Each figure carries the details of Russian court dress: tall fur-trimmed caps, heavy embroidered kaftans, wide sashes and boots turned at the toe. Watercolor washes in deep crimson, ochre and slate settle over the pencil, while hatching builds shadow along sleeves and collars.
