Sketch of Mosaic to the Monument to Kuinji

A rising sun clears the horizon in gold and rose, its light laid out in broad tesserae across the whole design surface. Nicholas Roerich drew this sketch of mosaic to the monument to Kuinji as a working study, and the hand of the draftsman shows everywhere. Crosshatching builds shadow under the sun disc while bands of cobalt and warm ochre carry the sky down to a dark horizon line. Every stroke sits at an angle, anticipating how glass tesserae would catch and split daylight on stone. Suited to a study or reading nook where morning light enters from the east side of the room.
