A mans head turns slightly out of the shadow, the features blocked in with swift, searching strokes. This self-portrait sketch by Nicholas Roerich captures the artist studying his own face without flattery or ceremony. The drawing lives in its economy. Hatching gathers along the cheekbone and under the jaw, then loosens across the forehead where the light falls.
