Sketch

Snow peaks press against the sky in this Nicholas Roerich sketch, a swift working study in which the master hand of the Himalayan series shows itself unfiltered. Here the mountains are not finished but felt. Broad tempera strokes lay in the picture plane quickly: a cobalt ridge sweeping diagonally, pale snow handled with thin dry scumbles, foreground rock blocked in with ochre and umber. The pencil underdrawing remains visible at the edges, a record of decisions made in seconds rather than hours. Light gathers nowhere; the whole slope holds an even, cold glare. A study like this belongs in a study indeed, above a writing desk or in a hallway where quiet attention is possible.
