Sketch II for Vitrage Dyptich Rex

A crowned sovereign figure fills the sheet, drawn in bold contour lines as a preparatory study for the vitrage dyptich Rex. Ciurlionis sketches the ruler head-on, symmetric and ceremonial, the crown rendered in quick decisive strokes. Ink and graphite crosshatching build shadow along the shoulders and robe, while faint guide lines trace where stained glass leading would fall. The face remains half-resolved, contemplative, framed by linear geometry that anticipates the finished glasswork. Cool grey tones dominate, warmed by scattered ochre accents near the crown. A study of this gravity belongs in a study or library, above a writing desk where its quiet royal presence rewards long looking.
