Sketch for the Ballet Fireworks

Fireworks burst across the sheet in jagged ribbons of red, gold and cobalt, radiating from a dark core like sparks flung from a struck flint. Giacomo Balla imagined Stravinsky as pure pyrotechnics, and the sketch delivers it: short staccato strokes and long trailing lances, drawn with the urgency of a choreographer racing the music. Ink and gouache sit in thick, decisive layers. Every burst overlaps its neighbor, so the whole surface hums with noise you can almost hear. Give it a room with strong light and hard surfaces, a stairwell or a music room, where the crackle of color reads from across the floor.
