Sketch for Ladoga series

Grey water slides between granite skerries in this sketch for the Ladoga series by Nicholas Roerich. Low cloud presses the horizon down while a bare headland takes the last cold light. Thin tempera washes carry the colour: slate and cobalt laid in flat horizontal bands for the swell, pale ochre burning through where rock breaks the surface, one line of pine dark against the shore. Brushwork stays loose, notes taken straight from the water. A study or reading nook suits its cool register; white walls, linen, and dark timber let all that northern lake light settle over the space.
