Skala w morzu

A dark rock holds its ground against the open sea in Skala w morzu, a seascape by Ferdynand Ruszczyc where water and stone carry the whole argument of the picture. Ruszczyc paints the Baltic mood he knew from the Vilnius shore: cold surf, blunt geology, no figures. Wet pigment reads almost like scraped plaster, the sea built from slate blues and gunmetal greys, foam broken into short pale strokes where the swell breaks against the rock. The stone itself sits nearly black, its edges softened by salt and spray. A room with white walls and northern light, a hallway or a study facing the water side of the house, gives it room to breathe.
