About this work

Sissu Monastery

Cubist crags split the valley below Sissu, and the monastery itself sits small against all that stone. Nicholas Roerich painted the Himalayan gompa as a fleck of civilization, flat white blocks holding their ground beneath slopes of raw cobalt and slate. Roerich lays his tempera in broad, faceted planes, each ridge chiseled as if cut from the mountain. Snowcaps read almost bone-white, while deep ravines sink into indigo shadow. A thin zig of track climbs toward the temple roofs, the only human gesture in a landscape that dwarfs it. Suits a study or hallway where a view of high passes is wanted, quiet but commanding.
