Silver Trees

Bare trunks cross the picture plane in pale silver, their branches thinning into a hushed grey sky. Vuillard titled the work Silver Trees, and the metal in the name is right there on the surface. Look closely and the paint sits in small, pressed dabs, the Nabi habit of building form out of flat touches rather than smooth blending. Cool whites carry the canopy. Beneath them, a faint violet shadow drifts along the ground, and one darker trunk leans left, breaking the symmetry. Nothing is outlined; edges dissolve where trunk meets air. A reading nook, a bedroom corner, or a narrow hallway with soft daylight would suit its quiet tonality well.
