Silver Poplar Trees

Poplars tower in a column of silvered foliage, leaves flickering between pewter and white where the light catches them. Pyotr Konchalovsky painted these groves with a loaded brush and total conviction. Thick impasto builds each trunk in slate and umber, bark texture standing off the surface in rough whorls of paint. Meadow grass runs below in olive and ochre strokes, and the sky behind the canopy burns pale, almost chalk white, at the horizon. A stairway hall or tall study suits the upward pull of such a landscape, its cool grey green palette settling a room without turning somber.
