Siena

A slim brick tower pins the skyline while burnt ochre rooftops tumble down a Tuscan hillside. Siena, painted by Pyotr Konchalovsky, builds itself in stacked planes of warm terracotta. Clay tile roofs read as slabs of rust and umber, split by alleys of deep violet shadow. Pale plaster facades hold the low sun, and dark cypress scrub anchors the slope beneath the city walls. Brushwork stays loose and buttery, more Cezanne than postcard. Set above a sideboard, in an entryway, or a study lined with travel books, the scene carries the settled heat of an Italian afternoon into everyday rooms.
