Siena

Terracotta rooftops tumble down the hillside of Siena, and Pyotr Konchalovsky builds every slope of tile with thick, loaded strokes of oil. The whole town leans into the light. A square campanile rises above the jumble, pale stone against a sky pushed toward ultramarine. Walls warm from ochre to burnt orange where the sun lands; shutters, balconies and chimney pots scatter small dark notes across the glow. Shadow pools cool violet in the narrow streets below. Hung in a study or above a dining table, it carries the dusty heat of an Italian afternoon into an otherwise quiet room.
