Sicilianische Brigg

A Sicilian brig rides at anchor under full sail, her two masts squared with canvas, hull dark against pale water. Heinrich Kuhn names the vessel plainly in the title, Sicilianische Brigg, Austria, and the photograph gives her the stillness of a portrait sitter. Rigging crosses the sky in fine dark lines, dozens of stays and shrouds drawn taut from bowsprit to masthead. Sailcloth fills with light. The sea lies almost flat, broken only by the reflection that smears the waterline. Kuhn handled the tonal range like a painter, letting shadow pool in the hull while sky and sail burn silver at the top of the frame. Suited to a study, a hallway, or above a writing desk, where the quiet geometry of rope and sail rewards long looking.
