Shosse in Winter

Snow packs the highway from ditch to ditch in Shosse in Winter, a road scene Pyotr Konchalovsky builds out of heavy, deliberate brushwork rather than pretty frost detail. Bare trees line the carriageway in dark strokes, their branches scribbled against a lead grey sky. Violet shadow cools the drifts while the roadbed itself stays warm, ochre gravel showing through rutted snow where wheels have cut. Paint sits thick on the surface, ridged and direct. A study or entryway suits its cold clarity, the long perspective pulling the eye down the road and out of the room toward that pale horizon.
