Ships down the Sava

Barges and steamers slide down the brown-green current of the Sava, smoke trailing flat across a low Serbian sky. Ships down the Sava carries Nadezda Petrovic at her most direct: river traffic, working hulls, no ornament. The brushwork is quick and loaded, ochre water churned into short strokes where the vessels cut through. Reflections break into horizontal flecks of grey and rust. Masts lean, banks recede in muted violet, and the whole surface keeps the energy of a sketch made riverbank-side, outdoors, in cold light. Suits a hallway or a study shelf-lined wall where riverine landscapes and Serbian modernist painting hold their own against books and clutter.
