Cherry blossom canopies crowd the upper register of Shinano in Spring, Fujishima Takeji oil rendering of a mountain province shaking off winter. Fujishima Takeji trained in Western technique and it shows: soft graduated skies, modeled tree trunks, a horizon built with atmospheric perspective rather than flat outline. Below the pink canopy, tilled fields step down a hillside in muted ochre and grey green, snow lingering in shaded furrows while farmhouse roofs sit small and dark against pale morning light.
