Sheaves of Corn

Golden sheaves stand bound and heavy in the foreground, stalks crossing at the necks where twine pulls them tight. Firmin Baes builds the harvest from layered pastel, grain by grain. Look close and the material does the work: hatched strokes of ochre and raw sienna stack into straw, deeper umber shadows sit under each bundle, and pale chalk highlights catch the cut stem ends. Behind, the field thins to a warm haze of dusty gold and soft green, stubble rows receding toward a low horizon. A farmhouse kitchen, a dining room with bare plaster walls, any table where bread is actually eaten.
