About this work

Sharugon Monastery, Tibet

Sharugon Monastery stands on its Tibetan ridge, white walls and flat roofs stacked against a sky Nicholas Roerich pushed toward deep Himalayan blue. Smoke-colored rock drops away beneath the buildings. The brushwork is economical and dry, tempera-like in its matte finish, with the monastery rendered in chalky whites and warm grays while shadow pools in violet along the slopes. Tiny prayer flags read as thin dark accents. Distant peaks thin out into pale bands, almost white. This Tibetan monastery study suits a study or hallway where its cold mountain light can carry a whole wall.
