Shady Cloister

An arched stone passage opens into dappled shade, sunlight breaking across flagstones in slanted bars. Shady Cloister belongs to the small but assured body of landscapes Winston Churchill painted at leisure from politics. Look closely and the shadows carry real color: violet pooling under the arcade, olive green where leaves filter the light, warm ochre catching the sunlit piers. The brushwork is loose, confident, laid on in thick strokes that let stone and foliage stay slightly unresolved. Cool blue sky glimpsed through the arches keeps the whole scene airy rather than somber.
