Long tree shadows fall across open ground, angled low and violet against pale grass. Shadows, landscape with trees belongs to the tonalist world of Max Meldrum, where light and dark do all the talking. The trunks lean at unhurried angles, their foliage massed in muted olive and dusty blue. Underneath, shadow pools in cool grey-lavender, broken by warm patches where sun still reaches the earth. Meldrum built such landscapes through careful tonal arrangement rather than crisp outline, so edges stay soft and forms emerge from value shifts alone.
