Shadow of the Teacher

A lone figure moves along a high mountain track, its long shadow stretched across scree by a low sun. Nicholas Roerich named the scene Shadow of the Teacher, and the title does the narrative work. The palette runs deep: indigo peaks, a pale crescent of snow, ochre path catching the last light. Thin tempera layers give the sky that chalky glow Roerich favored in his Himalayan canvases. The shadow itself reads almost black, sharper than the figure that casts it. Suited to a study or a quiet reading corner where long looking is welcome.
