Set Design for the Opera Judith by Alexander Serov

A towering Babylonian gate rises across the stage, all massed masonry, hanging lamps and deep theatrical shadow. Valentin Serov sketched this set design for Judith, the opera by Alexander Serov, as a working stage plan in gouache and graphite on paper. Cool grey washes dominate, with sudden accents of vermilion flame and gilt lamp-glow breaking the darkness. Crosshatching carves the stone into planes, while empty foreground space leaves room for the singers to move. Serov knew the theatre from childhood, and his hand here is swift and certain, every stroke serving the scene rather than the picture. A study, a hallway or a music room gives this dramatic architecture the audience it deserves.

Yes. It ships fully assembled in an oak or ash wood frame with shatterproof plexiglass glazing, and hanging hardware already fitted to the back.

Clean the glazing with a soft, lint-free cloth; apply any cleaner to the cloth, never directly to the piece.

As a guide, a piece hung above furniture should span roughly two-thirds of that furniture width. If you are between two sizes, the larger option almost always reads better on the wall than expected.
