Set Design for Glinka Opera The Monastery in the Forest

A wooden monastery rises among dark firs on a theatrical stage, its towers drawn in steep forced perspective toward a glowing backcloth of sky. Konstantin Yuon designed this scenery for Glinka opera, a life for the Tsar. Washes of amber and grey green build the timber walls and tented roofs, while cold blue shadows pool between the trees. The vista opens down a long stage axis, letting the eye travel deep into painted woodland. Loose, confident brushwork still shows the speed of a designer working for the boards. Hung in a hallway or music room, it brings stagecraft and Russian forest light into the everyday.
