An ancient oak anchors the foreground, its gnarled trunk framing the walled monastery of Sergiyev Posad beyond. Konstantin Yuon renders the ensemble in sunlit planes of ochre, red brick, and silvered green. Look at the treetop: leaves broken into dabs of sap green and pale gold, spread wider than the towers behind it. Onion domes catch soft light above the fortress walls, while small figures scatter across the dusty square, giving scale to the mass of stone and sky.
