Sergiyev Posad, The Monastery View from the North

Golden onion domes break the skyline above Sergiyev Posad, rendered by Konstantin Yuon in this view of the Trinity Lavra seen from the northern fields. The title names the subject plainly; the picture does the rest. Bell towers and rampart walls in chalky grey and cool blue rise over low rooftops, small figures scattered across the snowlike foreground. Yuon builds depth in layered planes, monastery mass receding under a wide, pale sky washed in soft rose and pearl. Brushwork stays crisp along the crenellations, looser across the open ground.
