Sergiyev Posad

Golden onion domes break through a pale winter sky above Sergiyev Posad, the town Konstantin Yuon returned to season after season, painting the monastery from rooftops and frozen streets. Blue shadow pools along drifted snow while ochre brick and whitewashed towers climb the composition. Domes read as hammered gold against cold air. Crows dot the rooflines. Small figures in dark coats cross the square below, each one no more than a brushstroke. A stair landing or entryway suits it, somewhere a long stretch of wall meets northern light and the eye rests on warm gilt against frost.
