Crowds surge across the piazza in September 20 demonstration, a scene Giacomo Balla built from thousands of separate brushstrokes, each sliver of unmixed color charged with the noise of a national celebration. Flags ripple overhead, their green, white and red broken into flickering ribbons of paint that tremble in the wind. Below, a dense mass of hats, coats and raised arms churns forward, dark strokes pierced by pale highlights where sun strikes a banner.
