Semmering Landscape

Mountain ridges fold over one another down the whole length of the picture. Semmering Landscape by Koloman Moser arranges the Austrian Alps as overlapping bands of blue, violet and green, each range paler than the one in front of it. Flat planes of color do the work here instead of texture. Fir trees sit as dark triangular clusters along the slopes, a clearing opens in ochre near the middle distance, and the sky holds a single unbroken wash above the highest ridge. Everything is reduced to shape and hue, the way a designer would plan it on paper. Strong in a study or a hallway where the cool alpine palette can carry the wall on its own.
