Segovia

Stone arches climb a hillside in Segovia, Ernest Lawson rendering the old Spanish town where Roman masonry and clustered rooftops share a single warm slope. The aqueduct crosses the composition in heavy granite grays, two tiers of arches stacked against ochre walls and terracotta rooftops. Lawson loads pigment thickly, buttery strokes of sienna and olive building the sunlit mass of the city, a hard blue sky pressed in behind. A study with worn leather chairs or a plaster-walled hallway suits it, the earthen palette and architectural weight rewarding a long, slow look.
