Seda, Old Warehouse

A long timber storehouse dominates the sheet, its heavy gable leaning over the lane like a patient old merchant. Dobuzhinsky titled the scene Seda, old warehouse. The ink wash runs grey over ochre, crosshatching shading the boarded walls and the sag of the roofline. Loose planks, small-paned windows, a shadowed doorway where goods once passed through. Narrow crosshatched strokes give the wooden facade a grain you can almost touch. Well suited to a study or hallway, where its quiet provincial melancholy rewards a slow look.
