Seaside Scene. Norway

Cold water meets dark rock along a Norwegian shore in this seascape by Vartan Mahokian. Low cloud presses down on the fjord, and small whitecaps break against stone. Mahokian paints the northern sea in slate grey and steel blue, layering thin strokes of foam along the tideline. Bare granite headlands frame the water, their surfaces scratched with dry brushwork that reads as lichen and weathering. A pale sky occupies most of the composition, its light diffused through coastal haze. Suited to a study or reading room where northern light and quiet water set the tone.
