Seaside Landscape from Suursaari Island

Rocky shoreline at Suursaari, water and sky meeting somewhere in the middle distance. Magnus Enckell paints the island coast with restrained, almost silent clarity. Low granite headlands sit in cool grey and slate blue, brushed in flat, unhurried planes. Thin bands of sea and cloud stretch across the composition, their edges softened by layers of thin oil paint. A lone tree anchors the foreground, its dark foliage a single note of depth against the pale horizon. The brushwork is quiet and precise, closer to drawing than display.
