Seashore, Nova Scotia

A rocky headland shoulders into cold Atlantic surf. This seashore view captures J. E. H. MacDonald working at the edge of Nova Scotia, where land meets open water. Heavy strokes of slate blue and storm grey build the sea, while the foreground rocks carry rust, ochre and moss green laid on thick, almost sculptural. Foam breaks in pale, quick dashes against the dark stone. The sky churns above in pewter and soft white, pressing the horizon low.
